"How hard should I push each set?" wrecks more progress than almost any other question. Go too easy and nothing grows. Grind every set to failure and you bury yourself in fatigue. Reps in reserve is the simple gauge that keeps you in the middle, where the growth actually happens.

What reps in reserve means
Reps in reserve, or RIR, is how many more reps you could have done at the end of a set if you had kept going. Stop a set with two good reps still in you and that was RIR 2. Keep grinding until the bar stops moving and you physically cannot get another rep, and that is RIR 0, also called training to failure.
That is the whole tool. Instead of guessing whether a set was "hard enough," you ask a concrete question: how many reps did I leave on the table?
Why not go to failure every set?
Training to failure feels productive. Mostly it is a fatigue tax. Those last grinding reps add a lot of tiredness for only a little extra muscle, and that fatigue follows you into your next sets and your next session, where it drags everything down. Push every set to the limit and you stall the same way an overtrained lifter does, which is the exact problem a deload week exists to clean up.
Leaving one to three reps in reserve gives you nearly all of the muscle-building signal with a fraction of the fatigue. You recover faster, you keep your form clean, and you can train that muscle again sooner. That is a better trade almost every time.

So how hard should you actually train?
For building muscle, keep most of your working sets at RIR 1 to 3. That is the range where the stimulus is high and the fatigue is still manageable.
- Newer lifter: lean toward RIR 2 to 3. You are still learning the movement and still learning to judge effort, and a little margin protects your form.
- More experienced: you can push the last set of a lift closer to RIR 0 to 1, because you read your own effort well and recover from it on purpose.
RIR and RPE, quickly
You will also see RPE, or rate of perceived exertion, on a 1 to 10 scale. It is the same idea from the other direction, and the conversion is simple: RPE = 10 − RIR. So RPE 8 is RIR 2, and RPE 10 is failure. Use whichever scale sticks in your head. They measure the same thing.

Most people, newer lifters especially, think they are closer to failure than they really are. A set that feels like RIR 1 is often actually RIR 3 or 4. Two things help you call it more accurately:
- Watch the bar speed. If the weight is still moving fast, you have more reps left than it feels like. Real reps in reserve slow down.
- Notice when reps start to grind. When the speed drops off a cliff, you are within a rep or two of failure. That slowdown is your signal, not how out of breath you feel.
Being winded is not the same as being out of reps. You get better at telling the difference every time you take a set close to the limit and see how many you actually had.
Using RIR to know when to add weight
This is where RIR earns its keep. Keep a rough eye on how hard your sets feel. When a weight that used to sit at RIR 1, where you barely finished, starts landing at RIR 3, where it feels comfortable, the weight got easy on you. That drift is your green light to add load.

Say you bench 135 lb for 3 sets of 8 and you are aiming to keep those working sets around RIR 1 to 2. Over a few weeks it might look like this:

Common mistakes
- Failure on every set. Huge fatigue for a sliver of extra growth. Save true failure for the occasional set.
- Sandbagging at RIR 4 to 5 all the time. Too easy to drive much muscle. You need most sets genuinely hard.
- Judging effort by feeling wrecked. Out of breath is not out of reps. Count reps left, not how gassed you are.
- Never taking a hard set. If you never get near your limit, you never learn where it is, and your RIR calls stay off.
